It took me a few minutes to replace it. But, let's wait what pool should say.

I could not vote for XP icons (maybe because I am not registered in the forum), so count my voice towards them. XP icons look much better than old ones.

I agree on XP icons looking better (and I voted for them) but just as an afterthought: The new icons are "smudgier" and require more what from the display than the current ones. I still think they're the way to go, but I can live with it if people vote for the clean, old-fashioned conservatism of the old icons instead.

Since now, all of eight ConTEXT users voted! :)

They don't require more than others since all icons are stored as 32bit bitmaps. Even those old fashioned.

If anyone looks as old-fashioned conservatist, it's you :) If suddenly appears 1000 votes against XP icons, you're the first suspect!

    Nine now ;D

    I voted for XP Icons.
The only remark I would add is: beware of any Win9x user (Not me, but they exist ;)).
Are these icons "backward compatible" to use a programmer slang?

Just tested it. On Win98 works as on Win2000.

What I had in mind was another kind of requirement--not on memory but on the quality of the screen. My desktop computer has an almost ten-year-old 17" CRT tube which is getting definitely "soft". On that screen, even simple 1px black lines look smudgy, let alone icons with thousands of colours!

    Age doesn't come alone :)

Oscar my friend, the icons aren't the problem.

Estonian vodka for a new CRT? Eh eh?

Don't be silly, my next monitor will be a TFT. I've even chosen the brand and model already (Eizo 568K) but I'm waiting for some inwards cashflow.

But if needs be, I'm willing to speak for all those coders who still have lousy old CRTs!

Oscar, dont be so negative. Man, start chillin or there's no more kissin
  16. SuperOscar New Member

Negative, who--me?! Not even when tested!

Do all the rest of the coders in the world already own high quality TFT screens?

However, I think the matter of the icons is neither here nor there. Real men (who code only in Assembler, as well known) never use toolbars or mice, they prefer the keyboard. Or better yet, punch cards :)

They also dont use context, they work in DOS EDIT. You sound like you have an issue of using GUI alltogether. What's wrong with improving the GUI? Why do you use smylies   ;D 8) ::) ::) :-\ :-\ :-\ :p :p 8) :( ;D ;D :) ;)

Not in the world! If they can't use vi, they fall back to edlin ;)

No, that's not me. I prefer GUIs over text mode interfaces because they allow colors, fonts, etc. etc, but if I were given a choice ([un]fortunately I am not), I would create an extremely simple and ergonomic GUI with almost a monochrome look and crudely simplistic icons. Something in the vein of the Whitehart theme for Firefox:

Why did the chicken cross the road?

I have a long list of replys to that if asked from different linguists (or types of linguists), but unless you have some training in linguistics as me, you probably miss the point... Here's a sample:

NORMATIVE LINGUIST: Because it was correct.

JUNGGRAMMARIAN: Because it was a law.

STRUCTURALIST-BEHAVIORIST: We cannot account for the internal motives of the chicken because we can only observe the structure of its objective actions.

NOAM CHOMSKY: Because it had an inborn urge to do that.

    B. L. WHORF & EDWARD SAPIR: It depends on what was the native language of the chicken.

FORMALIST: The question has no meaning, but the crossing of the road consisted of a sequence of steps in the order RIGHT-LEFT-RIGHT-LEFT...
